Mrs. Vincent's

Principal News

A Note from Ms Vincent

Here we are entering our last month of 2005.  My parents always use to say the older you get the faster time goes.  They have made a believer out of me!

Our students and teachers have been working very hard in all areas of the curriculum.  A special emphasis has been placed on Reading, Language Arts, and Math this year.  All students in 1st -4th grade are participating in a 90-minute uninterrupted Reading Block.  It seems to be working very well. Please read with your children as often as possible!

I want to wish you and your family a very Happy Holiday Season and a Successful 2006.

Student Council News

The ECES Student Council asks for your help in collecting pull-tabs (from soft drink cans) for the Ronald McDonald Fundraising Program.  The Nashville Ronald McDonald House raises funds each year by asking schools and other groups to collect pull-tabs.  The Ronald McDonald House's mission is to keep families close by providing a home away from home for families with children at Monroe Carrell Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.

We will collect pull tabs during the month of October.  Please show your support by sending in your pull-tabs.  Thanks!

Ms. Norman’s Music Notes

On December 15th at 7:00pm, the fourth grade classes will present "A Holiday Celebration in Song".  They have been working really hard on the music for this performance and we hope everyone will come to hear this program and celebrate the season with us.  There are so many musical events in our area during the holiday season.  Consider taking your family to hear or see one of the shows.  It's an excellent opportunity for you and your family to share in the wonderful arts available to all of us.    During the month of December all music classes will be learning about many different songs of the season including those of other cultures.  We are enjoying our new addition, "Music Express".  You can view some of the songs and things we will be exploring at www.musicexpressmagazine.com There is also a fun kids section on this website!

Please join us on December 15th for a wonderful celebration of the music of this joyous season!

Mr. Bryant’s PE News

Students, be sure to wear or bring tennis shoes when you come to PE each week and be ready to have lots of fun!

Everyone has done a good job of wearing their tennis shoes this year—even the kindergarteners.  A great PE teacher from long ago once said, "Going to PE without tennis shoes is like trying to go swimming without water".

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas break.

An event you might want to keep in mind:  Jump Rope for Heart in February

I will let you know more about this in the next couple of months.    Last year was a great success!  I think we raised nearly $2,600.

EAST CHEATHAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

East Cheatham Elementary School began as a school for grades 1-8.  It was built on seven acres of land purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Ewell Perry for $2,800.  Opening in the fall of 1957 with an enrollment of approximately 245 students, the original building included eight classrooms, a gymnasium and a cafeteria.  Mr. Othell Sullivan served as the principal for the first three years.  Some of the original faculty included Ronalda Harper, Evelyn Perry, Clarice Williams, Viva Lee Raymer, Maudi Roberts, Mary Ella Watts, Ella Harris and Raymond Osborne.

In the 1960's Mr. Raymond Osborne, Mr. Raymond Bagwell and Mrs. Christine Harris served as principals.  Two classrooms were added to the north end of the building, a library replaced the original cafeteria and a new, larger cafeteria was added to the back side.  An additional five acres of land was purchased for $5,148 and eight more classrooms were added to the south end of the building and a baseball field was set up.  Mr. Carter Grizzard served as principal from 1969-1975 and during this time four kindergarten classrooms were added to the north end.

Mr. Lynn Toombs and Mr. George Badon served as principals in the latter 70's.  In the fall of '79, Sycamore Junior High opened its doors to grades 7-9, leaving East Cheatham with grades K-6.  Mrs. Karen Cannon served as principal from 1979-1984, then Mrs. Sandra Albright the following year.

Mr. David Chester served 1985-1998; and during that time the 6th grade moved to Sycamore Middle School and a new wing with six classrooms opened in the fall of 1990.  East Cheatham became the first in the county to be accredited to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in December 1994.  In 1995 the 5th grade moved to Sycamore and East Cheatham has remained a K-4th Grade School to the present date.

In the fall of 1998, Mrs. Dawn Vincent became principal and continues to serve to this date.  In 1999/2000, the school year began with another wing with ten classrooms added to the south end of the building, and the cafeteria was enlarged to meet the growth needs of the community.  Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) meetings are held six times a year to discuss issues and concerns.  In 2000, a Parent Advisory Committee was established.

East Cheatham has had tremendous growth and change over the past 44 years.  During the past three years, student enrollment for K-4th has remained steady at approximately 500 students.  The size of the school building and the enrollment of students have doubled since opening in 1957, while only now serving about half the number of grades.  However, one thing has remained constant, East Cheatham has welcomed the children of the community with a commitment to provide each child with the opportunity to grow physically, psychologically, socially, and intellectually in order to become a contributing member of society.
